Montecore Size Guide

Montecore is regular fit, so take your normal size - and because almost everything we carry from the house is outerwear, the most useful thing this guide can tell you is not to size up for what goes underneath. The room is already in the pattern. Below you will find the EU to UK conversion, what to expect from the down pieces, and how the detachable and reversible jackets affect the fit, which is less than you might think.

Does Montecore Run Big or Small?

Neither. Montecore is true to size. Every product at Union 22 carries the Regular Fit indicator, so order the size you normally wear.

Montecore is an outerwear house, and outerwear that is cut regular has already been drafted to go over a knit. A jacket sized to your chest measurement will close over a jumper because that is what the pattern assumes.

Worth saying because the instinct with a winter coat is to go up a size for the layers. Do not. Sizing up a down jacket gives you a coat that hangs away from the body, which looks wrong and works worse: down insulates by trapping air against you, and a jacket with too much space inside it is a colder jacket.

The Union 22 Fit System

Every product page at Union 22 carries one of three fit indicators. It is an instruction about sizing, not a description of the style:

REGULAR FIT - TAKE YOUR NORMAL SIZE
True to size, no adjustment. This is the label on every Montecore product we carry, the jackets, the parkas and the trousers alike.
SLIM FIT - SIZE UP ONE
The garment cuts close and needs the size above. No Montecore product carries this indicator, which is worth noting given how many Italian brands do.
BIG FIT - SIZE DOWN ONE
The piece comes up large and needs the size below. No Montecore product carries this indicator.

Montecore Size Conversion: Jackets, Coats & Parkas

Montecore sizes on the Italian scale, where the number is roughly your half chest in centimetres. Every piece at Union 22 is listed with both, for example EU 50 / L UK.

Montecore / EUUKChest (inches)
EU 48M38-40"
EU 50L40-42"
EU 52XL42-44"
EU 54XXL44-46"

Measure your chest under the arms across the fullest part, over a shirt rather than bare, since that is closer to how the coat will actually be worn. Tape level and not pulled tight.

We buy Montecore through the middle of the run. Most pieces start at an EU 48 (Medium) and finish at an EU 52 or 54. If you need a Small or something above an XXL, message us and we will tell you whether we can get it rather than leaving you to guess from the selector.

Montecore Trousers: Waist Conversion

Montecore trousers use Italian waist sizing, which is your UK waist plus 16.

UK WaistMontecore / EU
UK 32EU 48
UK 34EU 50
UK 36EU 52
UK 38EU 54

Measure around your natural waist where the trouser actually sits. The trousers are a small part of what we carry from Montecore, which is an outerwear house first, so the run is narrower than on the jackets.

Detachable and Reversible: Does the Construction Change the Size?

Montecore builds several pieces that are effectively two garments, and the question is always whether that affects what to order. It does not. Take your normal size on all of them.

THE DETACHABLE CHEST PIECE
A quilted chest piece sits under the main body and comes out, so the jacket works as a heavier winter coat or strips back to a cleaner shell. The chest piece is drafted into the jacket rather than layered on top of it, so the outer size does not change whether it is in or out.
THE REVERSIBLE JACKET
Technical quilting on one face, padded virgin wool on the other, finished cleanly on both sides so neither reads as a lining. It is one garment worn two ways, in one size. Take your normal size and wear whichever face suits the day.

The same applies across the range, whether the piece is in the powder-touch technical cloth, a virgin wool quilt, a suede-trimmed shell or the ZEGNA silk stretch fabric. The materials change what the jacket feels like. They do not change what size to take.

What To Do If You Are Between Montecore Sizes

Take your normal size. Montecore grades in even sizes only, so there is nothing between an EU 50 and an EU 52 to fall into, and the regular fit means your usual size is the answer.

Do not size up for what goes underneath. A down jacket works by trapping air against the body, so the loose one is the colder one, and the longer parkas in particular lose their line when they are too big.

If you are genuinely on the line between two sizes, message us before ordering. The longline parka is the hardest of the range to judge from a photograph.
