Every autumn the same question comes up in the shop: what do I wear when it's too cold for a jumper and too mild for a coat? More and more, our answer is the hybrid jacket.

A hybrid jacket is half knitwear, half outerwear. The front is quilted technical fabric that keeps the wind off your chest. The sleeves, back or sides are knitted, so it moves and breathes like a jumper. You get warmth where you need it and comfort everywhere else.

Below are the hybrids we have in stock for Autumn Winter 2026, from Herno, Corneliani, Wahts and our own Zattura, with what makes each one different and how they fit.

What a hybrid jacket actually does

A padded jacket is warm but stiff. A knit is comfortable but the wind goes straight through it. The hybrid puts each fabric where it does the most good:

  • Technical front: quilted nylon panels block the wind and trap heat across the chest.
  • Knitted body and sleeves: wool, merino or cotton knit lets your arms and shoulders move and stops you overheating indoors.
  • Light and slim: no bulk, so it sits under an overcoat as easily as it works on its own.

That makes it one of the most useful pieces for a British autumn. On a mild day it is your jacket. When it turns properly cold it becomes the warm layer under your coat.

Herno: the merino and the hooded

Herno has two hybrids in this season, and they suit different people.

The Herno Tech & Knitted Merino Hybrid Jacket has a virgin wool knit with quilted technical panels in nylon and elastane. Merino regulates temperature, and the technical panels add wind protection. It is the smarter of the two and wears well over a shirt or under a tailored coat.

The Herno Tech & Knitted Hooded Hybrid Jacket pairs a cotton knit with a polyester technical build and adds a hood. It is the more casual option, and it comes in navy and dark brown.

Both are a regular fit, so take your normal size.

Corneliani and Zattura: the sharper fit

If you want a hybrid that looks closer to tailoring, these two are the ones.

The Corneliani Tech & Knitted Hybrid Jacket sets a technical quilted front against a virgin wool knitted body and sleeves. The knit is 80% virgin wool with a little stretch, so it keeps its shape. It is the one to wear with tailored trousers and a knit, or under a coat to the office.

Our own Zattura Knitted & Tech Quilted Hybrid Jacket follows the same idea: a virgin wool knitted body with quilted, padded technical nylon panels at the front. It comes in navy and black, and at £440 it is the most affordable of the knitted hybrids here.

Both are a slim fit. We recommend going up one size.

Wahts Franklin: the soft one

The Wahts Franklin takes a different route. It is knitted in a cotton and super extrafine merino blend (70/30), with a zip-through front and pockets. It sits halfway between a cardigan and a bomber: smart enough for the office, soft enough for the weekend.

It comes in night blue, anthracite melange and dark olive. Regular fit, so take your normal size.

A different kind of hybrid

The Paul & Shark 4 in 1 Ultralight Hybrid Down Hooded Jacket mixes fabrics in another way. It is an ultralight down jacket with detachable virgin wool sleeves and a detachable hood, so it works as a full jacket or strips back to a gilet. It is a useful choice if you want one piece for changeable weather.

How to wear one

  • On its own: over a shirt or a fine knit on milder autumn days.
  • Under a coat: as the warm layer beneath an overcoat in December and January. It pairs well with the weatherproof wool coats in our technical wool guide.
  • Smart casual: the Corneliani or Herno merino with tailored trousers and a roll neck.
  • Weekend: the Herno hooded or Wahts Franklin with chinos or travel trousers.

Quick answers

Is a hybrid jacket warm enough for winter? On its own it suits autumn and milder winter days. In real cold, wear it as a warm mid-layer under a coat or parka.

Can I wear one to work? Yes. The Corneliani, Herno merino and Wahts Franklin all sit comfortably with smart trousers and a shirt.

How do they fit? Herno and Wahts are a regular fit, so take your normal size. Corneliani and Zattura are slim, so go up one size.
