Does 4T2 Run Big or Small?

4T2 runs slightly small. Go half a size up. Not a full size, half.

The instruction on every 4T2 product page is specific for a reason: if you wear UK 8 in Nike or other sports shoes, choose UK 8.5 in 4T2. That gives you something concrete to measure against rather than an abstraction. Most people know their Nike size.

Half a size sounds like a small thing to bother stating. In a running shoe it is not. The difference between a shoe that works over ten miles and one that takes your toenails off is roughly that much.

Why a Running Shoe Is Sized Differently

4T2 makes road running shoes rather than fashion trainers that look like them, and the sizing follows from that.

Your foot lengthens when you run. It loads, spreads and swells over distance, which is why running shoes are conventionally bought with more room at the toe than a casual shoe. A trainer that fits perfectly standing still in a shop can be a size too short at mile eight.

So the half size up is not a quirk of the brand's lasts. It is the room a running shoe is supposed to have. If you are buying 4T2 to wear casually rather than to run in, you will still want the half size up, because that is how the shoe is built.

The Union 22 Fit System

Every product page at Union 22 carries one of three fit indicators. 4T2 is the one brand where the indicator alone does not tell the whole story, so the product description spells out the half size as well:

Every pair at Union 22 is listed with both EU and UK, for example EU 42 / 8 UK. Find your usual sports shoe size, then take the half size above it.

4T2 is graded in half sizes throughout, which is what makes the half size instruction workable in the first place. A brand that only cut whole sizes could not ask you to go up by half.

Not every model is cut in every size and the run varies between them, so the size selector on each product shows exactly what we hold in that pair.

What To Do If the Half Size Is Not Available

If your half size is sold out or not cut in the model you want, go up to the next full size rather than down to your usual one.

The reasoning is the same as the half size itself. A running shoe with a little extra room can be managed with a thicker sock or a tighter lace through the midfoot. One that is short cannot be managed at all, and over distance it is the fastest route to a lost toenail.
